Shipping Glossary

Coaming

Iron frame around the hatch opening on deck which forms a protective wall against the penetration of water

Coasting

Shipping along the coastal areas whose borders in Germany are defined by Germanischer Lloyd or the seafarers' office. Ships which owing to their type of construction, crew, equipment are not allowed for overseas trade can render home-going, intermediate or coastal services

Collect Freight

Freight payable to the carrier at destination. Most bills of lading specify that collect freight is payable even if the cargo does not arrive at destination

1. Fee charged by the agent to the shipowner's account for collecting the freight rate. 2. Fee payable for the collection, e .g. the collection of sea freight by the agent

Collecting Shed

Harbour sheds where general cargo is collected and then placed by the respective seagoing vessel for loading. In Hamburg, e.g. the Overseas Centre fulfils this function
